Rasmus Bjørk wrote an academic essay about an old question: “If the Universe is filled with life then why have we earthlings never met an extraterrestrial alien?” In short Rasmus’ work showed that the aliens simply could not have had time to explore our galaxy. But from a marketing and Web 2.0 perspective the interesting thing is that Rasmus uploaded his paper as a preprint to the open acces online archive ArXiv.org, where scientists and everyone else can freely read and download 400,000 research papers.
”When it was accepted then all hell broke loose” Rasmus’ was contacted by New Scientist and The Guardian. Shortly thereafter BBC- Radio Five called me and asked whether I would participate in a live interview, and subsequently Rasmus have been contacted by all kinds of journalists.
What we can learn from this is that just like Rasmus, the Universitet have to become part of the conversation. It is about embrasing open acces.
